Reading notes: attention and defaults

A small observation from changing where unread things are allowed to live.

Unread material tends to collect in the easiest place. If the easiest place is a noisy inbox, everything starts to feel urgent. If the easiest place is a quiet reading list, more things can wait without asking for attention every hour.

The useful trick is to separate capture from reading. Capture should be frictionless. Reading should be deliberate. When those two actions share the same interface, I end up browsing the queue instead of choosing one thing and staying with it.

Current setup

I keep a short weekly list and move only a few items into it. The rest stays archived by source. This makes the reading pile smaller, but more honest.

The point is not productivity theater. It is protecting a little uninterrupted attention for material that deserves more than a skim.
